A structured recovery system for rebuilding confidence, participation and quality of life around eating after treatment.

Designed for:

  • people living with dysphagia after treatment
  • head and neck cancer survivors
  • clinicians supporting recovery and PEG-to-oral transitions

Feeling Seen.

"I’ve been following Yvonne since my diagnosis in May 2023, and I’ve learned so much from her journey through head and neck cancer. She shared honest, practical insights, sometimes raw, always real that helped me more than she’ll ever know. Her stories gave me survival information, emotional strength, and a sense of being understood at a time when I felt completely alone. I remember crying more than once because she put words to things I hadn’t been able to express myself.

Fast forward two years, and I finally met Yvonne in person. I’m beyond grateful for everything she’s doing, sharing her experience, helping others heal, and proving that life after treatment is not just possible, but meaningful."

BACK AT THE TABLE™ (BATT)

Helping people move from surviving meals to participating in eating life again.

Designed For

  • People living with dysphagia after treatment
  • Head and neck cancer survivors
  • Speech pathologists, dietitians and rehabilitation professionals supporting recovery

Created by head and neck cancer survivor and educator Yvonne McClaren, BATT bridges the gap between swallowing safety and real-world eating recovery.

Developed from lived experience navigating PEG feeding, dysphagia, texture modification, food fear and social isolation, BATT translates the practical realities of eating recovery into a structured, patient-centred system that can be used by individuals and integrated into clinical care.

Why BATT Matters

Many people leave treatment medically stable, but emotionally, socially and practically unprepared for the realities of eating again.

The challenges often extend far beyond swallowing function:

  • Fear around food and swallowing
  • Reduced confidence and participation
  • Social withdrawal and isolation
  • Difficulty transitioning from PEG feeding to oral eating
  • Challenges with food preparation, planning and meal participation
  • Uncertainty about how to rebuild a meaningful eating life

BATT was created to help bridge this gap.

By combining practical culinary strategies, recovery pacing, social reintegration and lived experience, BATT provides a structured pathway for rebuilding confidence, participation and quality of life around eating.

Module Descriptions

MODULE 1: Your Path

Where are you now, and where are you going?

In this module, you’ll map out your personal journey from PEG tube feeding back to oral eating. You'll reflect on your current situation, set your goals, and learn how to track meaningful progress, because this isn’t just about food, it’s about reclaiming your life.

Big takeaway:

Understand your starting point and plot your own realistic, flexible path forward.

Participant workbook included.

MODULE 2: Your Mind

Get your head in the game - literally.

Eating after a long break isn’t just physical, it’s deeply emotional. This module helps you prepare mentally, identify fears or unhelpful beliefs, and develop confidence strategies. You’ll learn why mindset matters, and how to gently retrain your thinking to feel safe around food again.

Big takeaway:

Learn how to rebuild trust in your body and shift from fear to confidence.

MODULE 3: Your Food

Food is more than fuel - it’s freedom.

Here we get practical: how to choose foods, build texture tolerance, plan meals, and meet nutrition needs while still PEG feeding. You'll learn how to create a flexible, patient-led eating plan that fits your/their life.

Big takeaway:

Discover how to safely reintroduce foods in a way that nourishes and excites you.

MODULE 4: Your Body

Your body is talking - learn to listen.

This module focuses on physical strategies: in addition to SLP guidance I talk about complementary movement, awareness and self-management strategies that can support recovery alongside guidance from your healthcare team.

Big takeaway:

Learn how to support your swallowing and movement to make eating safer and more comfortable.

MODULE 5: Your Future

Plan for the long haul.

In the final module, you’ll learn how to manage setbacks, advocate for your needs, and stay on track beyond the initial transition. We’ll cover preparing for medical reviews, building a sustainable lifestyle, and keeping commensality - shared meals, as part of your recovery.

Big takeaway:

Leave with a long-term plan and tools to make eating joyful, sustainable, and social again.
